The Drone Threat
Is Real, and Growing

Drone technology has fundamentally reshaped the risk landscape for personnel operating in complex environments. What was once a concern confined to conventional battlefields is now a reality for commercial operators, security teams, and crisis-zone professionals worldwide.

From commercially available quadcopters repurposed for surveillance and weapons delivery, to sophisticated fixed-wing ISR platforms and loitering munitions, the spectrum of drone threats now extends far beyond the military domain.

AKE International's Drone Awareness course provides participants with a practical, operationally grounded understanding of the UAS/RUAS threat environment, covering the types of surveillance assets in use, their capabilities and limitations, how environmental conditions shape their effectiveness, and how individuals and teams can mitigate risk and take effective action when a drone is identified.

Delivered by experienced practitioners, this course combines doctrinal knowledge with fieldcraft and real-world case studies drawn from current conflict zones.

Course Modules

Module 01
The UAS Threat Landscape

An operational-level understanding of how drones are being used today, from intelligence gathering and target acquisition to direct weapons delivery, and why awareness matters for all personnel.

  • Combat roles of drones (ISR, BDA, weapons)
  • Loitering munitions and FPV weaponisation
  • Real-world case studies: Ukraine, Nagorno-Karabakh
  • Propaganda and second-order effects
Module 02
Surveillance Asset Types

A practical breakdown of the platforms you are most likely to encounter, from high-altitude fixed-wing ISR to commercially available rotary drones and tactical FPV systems.

  • High-altitude FWUAS (e.g. MQ-9 Reaper)
  • Medium-altitude FWUAS (e.g. Aerosonde, Shaheed)
  • Low-altitude RUAS (DJI, Skydio, Autel, Parrot)
  • Tactical FPV: armed and unarmed
  • Flight patterns and identification indicators
Module 03
Surveillance Classification

Understanding the difference between passive, directed, and aggressive surveillance, and how to recognise which phase you are in, is critical to making effective decisions in the field.

  • Passive: general ongoing observation
  • Directed: target identification and tracking
  • Aggressive: pre-engagement surveillance
  • Reading the transition between phases
Module 04
Terrain & Environmental Factors

Knowing how physical terrain and weather conditions affect drone platforms and their sensors gives you a decisive advantage, and allows you to plan routes and timings that reduce your exposure.

  • Valleys, ravines, cliffs and woodland cover
  • Urban environments: buildings, narrow streets, underpasses
  • Wind, cloud, precipitation and their sensor effects
  • Heat, cold, dust, mist and battery performance
  • Exploiting terrain and weather as natural countermeasures
Module 05
Camouflage & Concealment

CAMCON principles applied to the drone threat. Drawing on both human visual psychology and AI detection logic, this module equips participants to reduce their profile and avoid identification.

  • Colour, pattern, texture and shape awareness
  • Shine, shadow and silhouette discipline
  • Spacing and movement management
  • Hiding in plain sight: urban blending techniques
Module 06
Early Warning & Immediate Action

Practical drills for detecting a drone threat early and responding effectively, whether the drone has you under surveillance or has transitioned to an active attack profile.

  • Sound, visual and probabilistic early warning indicators
  • Immediate Action Drill: surveillance (Stop, Listen, Look, Locate…)
  • Immediate Action Drill: attack (Move, Cover, Evade…)
  • Decision-making under pressure
